About Event
MMC (Metal matrix composites) are metals reinforced with other metal, ceramic or organic compounds. They are made by dispersing the reinforcements in the metal matrix. Reinforcements are usually done to improve the properties of the base metal like strength, stiffness, conductivity, etc. Aluminium and its alloys have attracted most attention as base metal in metal matrix composites. Aluminium MMCs are widely used in aircraft, aerospace, automobiles and various other fields. MMCs are used for Space Shuttle, commercial airliners, electronic substrates, bicycles, automobiles, golf clubs and a variety of other applications. From a material point of view, when compared to polymer matrix composites, the advantages of MMCs lie in their retention of strength and stiffness at elevated temperature, good abrasion and creep resistance properties. Aluminium based composites reinforced with intermetallic phases are characterized by considerable resistance to tribological wear under technically dry friction condition in a cooperation with composites based on the aluminium alloy. MMCs are also known as the difficult-to-machine materials because of the hardness and abrasive nature of reinforcement element like Alumina.
