Creativity and innovation are new drivers of every economy. Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) plays a vital role in enhancing the socio-economic prosperity of every country. Intellectual property is associated with intangible property or proprietary quality, which applies to any product of the human intellect that has commercial value. Intellectual Property Rights are one's legal rights in respect of the 'property' created by one's mind – such as an invention, or piece of music, or an artistic work, or a image, or a design, which is used in commerce, in the form of books, music, computer software, designs, technological know-how, trade symbols, etc. Most of these rights are protected by the laws governing Patents, Trademarks, Copyright and Designs. IP is more than an economic asset and with the increasing connection of property during this era of economic process, it is important to recognize the role which IP systems play in the growth of the Nation. Application and implementation of Intellectual property laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Protection against unauthorized use in a particular country depends, basically, on the national laws of that country. It is important to have an overall strategy to protect ones IP. There are inter-governmental efforts to harmonize them through international treaties. With corporations, institutions and individuals constantly forge ahead in newer fields and geographical territories and with path breaking inventions becoming the norm, the field of Intellectual Property Rights has assumed primeval importance, especially in emerging economies like India.
