About Event

In view of many engineers and scientists opting for higher education in materials science and metallurgical engineering , it is appropriate to discuss the materials characterization facilities starting from the basics. Hence the need for this two days seminar on “MATERIALS CHARACTERISATION AND QUALITY CONTROL”.
Characterisation of the finished and /semi finished materials is essential for quality assessment, quality control and development of novel materials for specific applications. It plays a vital role in the metallurgical failure analysis and also in preventing recurrence of such failures. Though an Optical metallograph is the basic tool for materials characterization providing microstructural details of the material investigated, a materials scientist should utilize advanced techniques like Electron microscopy, X Ray Diffraction and methods to evaluate technological properties at elevated evaluation and subzero temperatures for specific applications. Knowledge of creep , fatigue and crystallographic orientations in a finished component are too essential for structure-property correlations , the basis of materials characterization. An understanding of the required characterization techniques can reduce wastage of costly materials- remembering the old adage- a materials scientist is “ a blacksmith with goldsmith’s precision” .
