KURUKSASTRA’14 The Carnival Comes Home History tells us that for a large part of India’s history, relations between its scattered states given their disparate cultures was a diplomatic nightmare, more so because there was no common or efficient means of communication. Some things, however, come from the spirit. A spirit that is universal and cannot be compressed into an explanation. From the dry sands of the west to the wet greenery of the east, the snows of the north to the heat of the south – the spirit of festivity, colour, music, food, laughter and excitement needs no translation. Come March, and it is time to break the shackles of the daily routine, the ordinary, and the insipid. Splash your dreams in a myriad of colours on a canvas of your choosing. Let loose with grace, rhythm, or just plain enthusiasm – dance your heart out. Create mesmerising melodies with your voice, or weave symphonies with your fingers. Ascend the stage and hold the audience in the palm of your hand with your wit and eloquence, language no bar. Be whoever you want to be, in a world of your own under the stage lights. Create illusions and magic through a still image, a fleeting moment frozen in time. Crusade against social inequality and put a smile on a child’s face. Come and be inspired by the maestros Or just explore, eat, enjoy and absorb each and every moment. The event? Call it mela. Call it thiruvizha. Call it keli, anandotsav, sambaralu. The spirit of celebration now has a new name. It’s called Kuruksastra. The carnival has hit Thanjavur. Its time you did.
