4th Edition of Winter School on Biomedical Optics (4th WiSBO)

Biomedical optics has become one of the most inevitable field in the recent research in clinical diagnosis and treatment. In this course, we will learn about the fundamentals of biomedical optics, starting from how the photon interacts with a single atom, to a diatomic species, and then with polyatomic species such as haemoglobin. You will learn the basics of spectroscopy and different imaging modalities such as fluorescence, UV-Vis-NIR, diffuse optics, polarization, Speckle contrast, and multimodal imaging. You will also learn about fundamental and advances in the field of optical biosensors and various plasmonic resonances. We will also discuss the principles and details along with demonstration of various microscopic imaging such as brightfield, phase contrast, fluorescence and polarization-based microscopy.

The Department of Electronics and Communication, IIITDM Kancheepuram is organizing the 4th Edition of Winter School on Biomedical Optics (WiSBO ’26-27) at IIITDM Kancheepuram-Chennai, India between 27th December to 30th December. The participants (about 40 to 50) will be PhD students, Faculty members, and Industry participants working in the field of biomedical optics throughout India.

Thrust Areas:

1. Biophotonics and Sensing: Fundamentals, radiative transfer functions, monte-carlo techniques, and tissue polarimetric, and optical fiber sensing techniques. Fundamental of Optical Biosensor: Plasmonics, Raman scattering, Plasmonics, SPR, LSPR, SPP, Raman spectroscopy, SERS, SORS. Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Imaging.

2. Spectroscopy Methods in Life Science: Basics of spectroscopy methods, Vis-NIR-MIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fluorescence spectroscopy.

3. Tissue Imaging and Image Processing: Diffuse Optical Imaging, Laser Speckle Imaging, Fluorescence, Optical Coherence Tomography, Photoacoustic Imaging, Medical Image Processing, key feature extraction. The fundamental of biostatistics for clinical diagnosis will also be discussed in this day.

4. Microscopic Imaging: Principles of microscopic imaging, polarization-based microscopy, Phase contrast and Fluorescence microscopy, and nanoscopy.

Registration (Open): The expression of interest (EoI) to attend the 4th edition of WiSBO is now open. (First-cum-first basis)

Last date of registration: 10th December, 2026 (The registration may close, if the total number of seats are filled).

Who Can Apply?: Regular UG (B.E/B.Tech) students, PG-level (MTech/M.E./M.Sc/MBBS) students, Ph.D scholar pursuing their degree from University / Institution within India, Faculty, and Industry members in relevant fields. Students who are purusing their studies or who have graduated can apply in student categroy.

Who Should Attend?: The school covers the basics as well as advanced topics in the key thrust areas of medical optics. Students, faculties, and researchers whose interests overlap medical optics and clinical diagnostics/therapeutics are encouraged to apply.

Cancellation Policy: The cancellation may be requested before 15th December, 2026. The request for cancellation will not be allowed after 15th December, 2026.

Registration Fees: ₹2500 (INR) for Students (UG/PG/PhD), ₹4000 (INR) for Faculty & Industry. The prices are inclusive of GST. The registration fees cover breakfast and lunch throughout five days of the school. The seats are limited to about 40. The registration is based on first-cum-first basis.
