Water quality is a major concern all over the world,especially in rural areas. Direct access to safe drinking water is not a reality in many countries, including ours. Expansion of various industrial and agricultural sectors has also led to point and non-point sources of pollution which has also reduced the availability of safe drinking water. Shortage of fresh water has necessitated the se of other available water resources including water from the seas. Solution to these problems has come in the form of various water treatment technologies that has been developed. Although membranes were first used for water treatment in the 1960s and there has been tremendous development in their use not only in water treatment but also in waste water treatment for recycling. The membrane cost is no longer prohibitory, leading to its widespread use for industries, research establishments and households. And time is apt for discussing with retrospection on its development and looking up at newer avenues for its sage. The aim of this conference is to bring together scientists, researchers and individuals who are working in the field of providing clean water to share their experience in using membrane processes for water treatment.
