About the event
Amalgam is the annual technical festival of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of IIT Madras. It was found 9 years ago as an expression of the spirit of Materials science and Engineering. Spread over a period of 3 days, we witness the core of engineering manifested in the form of multitude of events like Paper and poster presentation, Industry defined problems, Math modeling, Spirit of Materials Engineering, Etch it, Process planning, Jaagruthi etc. Amalgam is open for participation by both UG and PG students of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and its allied departments like Mechanical and Chemical engineering.
An overall cash prize of ₹1,37,000 is to be given away to the winners. The fest is conducted by one of the top most institute of the country. So please do participate and benefit.
Events & highlights
The festival includes the following events:
Paper presentation, Industry Defined Problems (IDP), Process planning, Etch it, Quizzing events, Department open house, GD Challenge, Spirit of Materials Engineering (SoME), Treasure Hunt, Photography and T-shirt design contest.
Meet the organizer
Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

Workshop on Computational methods and techniques, XRD, Crystallography, Non-destructive Testing (NDT), Advanced Welding Techniques, Quantitative Metallography and Image analysis, Interface colloids & polymers.

Registration Fees
An entry fee of ₹50 will be collected to participate in Amalgam events. This can be paid on the spot. Additionally each workshops will cost ₹250 if one wants to participate. A mail will be sent to participants who have been chosen to attend the workshops. It will have the fee payment particulars regarding the workshops.
How to Reach
Reaching IITM
The IITM campus:
1. Is 12 kilometers from Chennai Central Railway Station.
2. Landmarks: Guindy Snake Park and Adyar Cancer Institute are adjacent to the IIT Madras Main Gate
3. Is opposite to Central Leather Research Institute campus
4. Is near and opposite to Anna University
A. From Chennai Central:
1. Local train: If you do not have heavy luggage, the MRTS Station called Park Town on the Beach Velachery line, opposite to Chennai-Central station, is a good option. From there, you can take a train to Kasturba Nagar (Adyar); (which comes after the kotturpuram station) and reach for Madhya Kailash temple and then walk towards west on Sardar Patel Road to campus main gate. From the gate there are IITM buses to the hostels, every 15 minutes.
2. You can catch a bus just outside the Chennai Central. 18B and 5C are the direct buses to IITM (Get down at Gandhi Mandapam/IITM in 18B or Madhya kailash in 5C). IITM main gate is 200m from both the bus stops. From the gate there are IITM buses to the hostels, every 15 minutes.
3. Hire an auto/taxi to IIT Madras. You can catch institute buses from the IIT Madras main gate to the control room. The fare will be roughly Rs.350-380 for a Taxi and Rs.200-250 for an Auto.
B. From Egmore Station:
1. Catch 23C which heads directly to IITM. From the main gate there are IITM buses to the hostels, every 15 minutes.
2. Local Train: Participants arriving at Egmore station can board a local train to Chennai Fort station (the second stop). At Chennai Fort station please change trains and board a train on the Beach-Velachery line and get down at "Kasturba Nagar Station". The main gate of the campus is at walking distance from the station.
3. The auto and taxi fares from Egmore are approximately Rs.200 and Rs.250-300 respectively.
C. From Airport:
1. Hire an auto/taxi to IIT Madras. Inside the campus, get down at the Hospitality Control Room.
2. Bus: Catch PP21 directly to institute or 21G to Gandhi Mandapam which is near to the main gate. From the main gate there are IITM buses to the hostels, every 15 minutes.
D. From CMBT:
1. You can catch bus number 23M which will drop you off near to the Institute main gate.
2. You can also hire an auto/taxi for a fare of around Rs.250/300 respectively. From the main gate there are IITM buses to the hostels, every 15 minutes.
