Human rights education can be defined as education\, trainin g and information aimed at building a universal culture of human rights. A comprehensive education in human rights not only provides knowledge about human rights and the mechanisms that protect them\, but also imparts the skills needed to promote\, defend and apply human rights in daily life. Hu man rights education fosters the attitudes and behaviours needed to uphold human rights for all members of society.
\nHuman rights education ac tivities should convey fundamental human rights principles\, such as equal ity and non-discrimination\, while affirming their interdependence\, indiv isibility and universality. At the same time\, activities should be practi cal - relating human rights to learners’ real-life experience and enabli ng them to build on human rights principles found in their own cultural co ntext. Through such activities\, learners are empowered to identify and ad dress their human rights needs and to seek solutions consistent with human rights standards. Both what is taught and the way in which it is taught s hould reflect human rights values\, encourage participation and foster a l earning environment free from want and fear.
\nThis training programm e will develop the capacity of participants to engage in human rights educ ation - to foster knowledge\, skills\, attitudes and action for the protec tion and promotion of human rights among teachers and students using right s-based teaching methods. This programme will include participatory learni ng activities and active discussion that draws on participants’ own know ledge and perspectives. Participants will:
\n-Learn key human rights concepts\, international law and strategies for human rights advocacy
\n-Be introduced to and practice rights-based teaching approaches\, which include participatory\, interactive and experiential learning methods tha t respect human rights.
\n-Design and facilitate a human rights learn ing activity
\n-Learn how human rights education can meet state stand ard requirements
\nProgramme content will be tailored to meet the nee ds and interests of participants.
