DESCRIPTION:<p>Smart material based systems (SMBS)\, sometimes referred to
  as intelligent materials\, normally involve distributed parts that can p
 erform sensing\, actuation\, computation and communication. Inspired by t
 he multi-functionality of biological body\, a smart structure has the abi
 lity to carry out an appropriate response to accommodate time-varying ext
 ernal and internal environment\, such as load\, shape change\, damage or
  failure. According to different applications\, mechanisms with sensing a
 nd control are tightly and seamlessly incorporated with various smart mat
 erial actuators that allow the alteration of stimuli-response behaviors a
 s well as system characteristics at the micro- or macro-level. Many types
  of smart sensors and actuators\, such as piezoelectric transducers\, sh
 ape memory alloys\, electro- and magneto-strictive materials\, electro- an
 d magneto-rheological fluids\, dielectric elastomers\, are being fundamen
 tally considered\, which span a wide range of applications in aerospace\,
  automotive\, civil engineering\, industrial machinery\, medical equipmen
 t\, microelectromechanical system (MEMS)\, and so forth. Apart from nume
 rous studies on intelligent structures\, the implementation of smart syst
 ems with control strategies\, signal conditionings\, and power amplificat
 ion electronics is becoming a key challenge. </p>
