Topology is a strong global constraint that can be useful in  generating geometrically accurate segmentations of anatomical structure s. It is necessary to integrate topological constraints into segmentation procedures in order to generate geometrically accurate and topologically correct models\, which is critical for many clinical and research applic ations. Topology is the
\nmathematical study of the properties that a re sealed through deformations\, twisting\, and distending of objects. Hu man anatomy follows this rule\, even for tremendously complicated shapes like the cerebral cortex or the vasculature. To achieve accurate and top ologically correct descriptions of anatomical structures from medical ima ges is a critical step for many clinical applications In medical imaging \, the overall shape of a region of interest is typically prescribed by m edical knowledge\; it is usually known a priori. Excluding pathological c ases\, the shape of most macroscopic brain structures can be continuously  deformed into a sphere. In mathematical terms\, these structures have t he topology of a sphere. The field of biomedical imaging utilizes advance d technologies to capture\, store\, analyze and display images at the org an\, tissue\, cellular and molecular level.
