Event Guests

Dr. H C Verma

All engineering aspirants best recognize Dr. Harish Chandra Verma as the author of their bible- Concepts of Physics. A nuclear experimental physicist and professor in the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, his chief interest lies in condensed matter and material applications. Currently, he is working on Nano crystalline magnetic materials and alloy systems. His two volume books- Concepts of Physics and Quantum Physics are highly esteemed by students for their depth and clarity in presentation of basic concepts. He undertook many socio- educational initiatives such as Siksha Sopan and School Physics Project to elevate the standard of physics education in India. An idol for JEE aspirants and a godfather to all children from the underdeveloped localities close to IIT Kanpur, he is indeed an able educator and a great social engineer.

A S Pillai

Dr. Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Controller of the R&D Division at DRDO, is the founder CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace. An electrical engineer from Madras University with a management degree from Harvard Business School, he has contributed in India's major space research programmes. He was the Programme Director of IGMDP at DRDL Hyderabad, under the leadership of Dr. Kalam. Dr. Pillai envisioned and developed the unique concept of 'BrahMos', the most successful joint venture of India which is also a world leader in the family of cruise missiles. Dr. Pillai is the author of several internationally acclaimed technical papers and has co-authored many books with Dr. Kalam.

A fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and a member of many other professional bodies, Dr. Pillai has been awarded the 'Padma Bhushan' and 'Padma Shri' by the Government of India. He has also earned several other honours for his invaluable contribution in the field of science and technology.

Dr. Richard Stallman

Dr. Richard Stallman launched the free software movement in 1983 and started the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org)
in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it
and redistribute it, with or without changes. The GNU/Linux system,
basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens
of millions of computers today. Stallman has received the ACM Grace
Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic
Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award, and the the Takeda Award for
Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several doctorates honoris
causa, and has been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.

Dr. John Cromwell Mather

Dr. John Cromwell Mather is a senior astrophysicist and cosmologist at NASA and adjunct professor at the University of Maryland. He received the 2006 Nobel prize for physics for his work as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, where he led the team that proposed the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE). Dr Mather and the COBE team showed that the cosmic microwave background radiation has a blackbody spectrum confirming the Big Bang Theory to extraordinary accuracy. Currently, as a senior project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, Dr. Mather leads the science team and represents scientific interests within the project management. Dr Mather has served on advisory and working groups for NASA and Center for Astrophysical Research in the Antarctic.

Sachin Gupta

Sachin Gupta is the co-founder and CEO of the tech recruitment company, HackerEarth. He is a Computer Science graduate from IIT Roorkee who realized that he loves the sales and marketing aspect of a start-up as much he loves to code. He has worked as Software Developer at Google and Microsoft before he ventured out to build HackerEarth. HackerEarth was started aiming to cultivate the culture of coding among students in India and to help overcome some of the teething problems that tech companies face while recruiting. Sachin now heads Sales and Marketing at the company and apart from being a passionate coder,he has also published 3 research papers in the field of parallel computing and image processing.

MS Pannirselvam

MS Pannirselvam is one of the 14 leading scientists behind the successful Mars Orbiter Mission of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He is the Chief General Manager and Range Operation Director at Sriharikota Rocket Port.
He was assigned the responsibility for maintaining launch schedules without any slippages, for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25). He played a very crucial role in the success of Mangalyaan project. It is India's first interplanetary mission and with this ISRO has now become the fourth space agency to reach Mars, after the Soviet space program, NASA, and the European Space Agency. His contribution made India, the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit, and the first nation in the world to do so in its first attempt.
