About Event
Even after 70 years of independence more than half of ourrural population still defecates in open. Almost 70% of girls in rural India drop out from schools owing to inadequate sanitation facilities. The government of India spends 12 billion rupees per annum on treating ailments arising due to improper sanitation. Indeed the lack of toilets is a prime challenge that India has failed to confront and has gone unnoticed for decades. In 2014 on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi our Honorable Prime Minister Shree Narendra Modi initiated his dream cleanliness campaign “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. Ever since then nationwide campaigns have been launched to improve sanitation facilities especially in the rural areas. Apart from the socioeconomic strings attached to the topic there are also many engineering aspects that have not received adequate attention. From the material of construction to novel techniques for fecal waste disposal, there have been much advancement in this field but on the ground level things still continue with the age old technologies. Toilets and fecal waste management is a topic that has been deprived of the genuine research attention that it deserves due to huge challenges it possess to our nation.
